Also known as a shoulder labral tear, shoulder SLAP tear occurs as a result of a torn piece of cartilage on the inside part of the shoulder joint. Common symptoms of shoulder SLAP tear include shoulder pain, clicking or locking sensation of the shoulder, stiffness of the shoulder joint and general weakness of the shoulder. Shoulder SLAP tear is commonly caused by trauma, repetitive overhead movements, and normal wear and tear.
A conservative treatment approach is usually recommended for a shoulder SLAP tear. This includes the use of medication and physical therapy. However, in severe cases, surgery may be required, which is done through an arthroscopic (keyhole) procedure to repair or remove the torn cartilage in the shoulder joint.
